MORE ABOUT OUR RACING SCHOOL
Designed for the newcomer to outboard racing, CVRA’s Driving School aims to teach interested participants the fundamentals of outboard racing including basic regatta format and safety rules. Veteran CVRA members conduct classroom training on starting techniques, racing strategy, planning fundamentals, and much more.

Classroom curriculum is followed by time on the water putting the newly learned skills into practice.  Upon completion of the CVRA Driving School, students will have the skills and knowledge to compete in an outboard racing event.

All participants will be instructed on a variety of topics that will prepare them for kneeling in the cockpit of your race boat. The instructor will review hull design (Hydroplanes and Runabouts), motors, propellers, safety equipment (including life jacket, helmet, and Kevlar), general safety rules for the event, scoring, starting, and flagging. When they have completed the classroom session, they have an understanding of how Stock Outboard racing works.

Drivers can expect to take a ride in a real race boat at the end of the course. We’ll fit you with a boat that is appropriate for your height, weight, and age. Students race three laps by themselves and then have a race against the instructor.

Students are fitted with protective pants and a top, a race-specific life jacket, and full-face helmets. They learn how to safely operate the boat during an on-land instruction class. Everything from the basics, the controls, race strategy, and boat design is covered.
